Entering into his eighth season in the red and black, defender Mason Redman is continuing to prove himself as one of Essendon’s most reliable team members.

The 25-year-old was pivotal for the Dons in 2022, averaging 21.2 disposals and being a calming and composed presence in the backline throughout his 20-game season.

If the stars align in 2023, Redman is set to make his century milestone against Sydney in Round 20.

After a series of injuries early in his career impacted his ability to find consistency, last year proved to be a breakout season for the half back.

After finishing a career-high fourth in the 2022 Crichton Medal,

Redman is looking to continue his strong form into a new year.

“In my first five years, I was unlucky with injury. But the last two years, I’ve been able to get through the pre-season unscathed thankfully, and this year is no different,” Redman said.

“A big focus for me is just to get match sim reps out on the field, I think that’s been big for me building my game as a half back player and also as a leader.”

A fan favourite amongst many in the red and black, Redman’s name has been thrown up as a potential future captain when incumbent leader Dyson Heppell decides to step down from the role.

Although harbouring leadership aspirations, Redman has thrown his support behind Heppell, saying he’s full behind Essendon’s captain.

“If it came around, and the club thought I was the right man for the job, 100% I’d put my hand up,” Redman said.

“But at this stage the way I look at it, is Dyson is still our captain until he or the club decides anything different.”

“Brad has been big on letting the pre-season unfold, seeing how everyone goes out on the field. As far as I stand, Dyson has been unreal this pre-season, he’s come back raring to go.”
