Towering ruckman Sam Draper returned to the track early this week ahead of next Monday's official first session.
“I’m feeling really good, it’s nice to be back here (at the NEC Hangar), we’ve had a long break, so it’s nice to get refreshed and get fit again," Draper said.
Following his rapid rise in 2022, Draper signed a two-year contract extension during the off-season, committing to the club until 2025.
Draper played every game last season, averaging more than 24 hit outs and hitting the scoreboard 12 times, including his round 18 major that was named the 2022 Goal of the Year.
“I’m really happy I was able to sign my contract and get it done before the next season starts, it just shows how excited I am and how proud I am to play for this club. I love playing here, love the boys and I’m really excited for what’s to come next," Draper said.
“I’ve got some big goals in my head, I just want to be able to do the same (play every game), and get a few more wins on the board with the team.”
Essendon has made many changes during the off-season, most notably the appointment of Brad Scott as senior coach.
“I think Brad will have a huge impact at the club," Draper said.
“We’ve got a lot of new coaches in and a lot more support, so we definitely have the resources now to improve and be the best team we can be.”
Along with new faces at the club, the Dons' top pick Elijah Tsatas attended training this week after his selection Monday night.
“I think Elijah is settling in really well, from what I’ve seen he looks like a great little player," Draper said.
"We’ll get a bit of work into him over the pre-season and hopefully he’ll be a good player for us.”
After a successful draft period, the Dons are prepared to attack the next season head on and Draper is eager to prove himself in 2023.
“I’m not sure if I’ll be able to go goal of the year again next year, but I’ll definitely try my best," Draper said.
“We’ve got a lot to work on, but I think we’re ready for it and we’re definitely a capable group.”
