1. Round 1 at Marvel Stadium
The inaugural AFLW match between the Bombers and the Hawks was moved to Marvel Stadium after tickets sold out within a day. Attracting a crowd of over 12,000 people, the largest crowd of Round 1.
The Bombers made history with their first ever win, defeating Hawthorn by 26 points. Seven players debuted in Round one, with Paige Scott earning herself a NAB Rising Star Nomination.
2. Big win in the West
Bombers were looking powerful with a 52-point victory over West Coast. At the time this Round Three game recorded the highest ever halftime score, most multiple goal scorers (5) in season 7 and was the Bombers first Away and interstate win in history.
3. Dreamtime Game
Assistant Coach Kirby Bentley hand paints the teams’ boots with the symbols of the people for the Dreamtime game. 16 arches on each of the boots to symbolise the 16 players, united together.
4. Pride Round
Pride Round saw a fresh sash on our Bombers guernsey, designed by VFLW players Mia-Rae Clifford and Kendra Heil. The sash on the guernsey is created by handprints of players and staff from the Bombers’ VFLW program who identify in the LGBTIQA+ community. The guernsey was a great representation of connection and support.
5. Debutants Galore
Our inaugural AFLW season saw a lot of new faces take the field. Essendon played 13 debutants in season 7, four went on to play out the entire season, and two earned Rising Star nominations.
6. Rising Stars
Paige Scott burst onto the scene in Round 1. On her debut game Scott would earn one of the first NAB Rising Star nominations and a lot of new fans. Against Hawthorn Scott delivered 16 disposals, 10 kicks and a goal to begin her soon to be highly decorated year, ending the season as the lead goal scorer for Essendon.
Stephanie Wales stood tall all season, an exciting ruck, Wales collected 21 hit outs, seven disposals and seven tackles against Sydney to earn herself a Round 8 NAB Rising Star nomination. But we can’t forget to highlight her stand out performance in Round 3 where she kicked three goals against the Eagles.
7. Round 10 Victory
Essendon took on Port Adelaide in the final round of Season Seven. A 27 point victory in the wet would seal the deal on a strong first season. The win over Port Adelaide puts the Bombers on top of the four expansion clubs this year, defeating all three other teams this season.
