Some of what the fans had to say:
“Injury interrupted season and could not cement a spot in the team. Next year is crunch season for Cory, but I believe he can become a very important player for us in 2003. Good luck Cory.” Glenn Sperling.
“Was very surprised that he didn't come on as his 2001 form suggested he would. Hopefully he will take that next step in 2003. We will certainly need him to do well following our recent trades.” Angela Standen.
“Expected more after a good season in 2001. Needs to step up as his pace would be very valuable in the midfield.” Roderick Brown.
“I still have big hopes for Cory. He always looks good when he gets the pill, but he just doesn't seem to get it enough. He should run with the ball more too, use his pace. He was hampered a bit by injury but some good reserves form got him into the seniors, and hopefully he will have a full season in 2003.” Damon Beckwith.
“Disappointing year compared to 2001 due to injuries and lack of opportunities. Expect to step up in 2003 with the exit of a number of players. Will be suited for the half-forward flank or on the ball.” David Osborne.
“Few chances this year after promising 2001. Needs to improve consistency to maintain senior position - would like to see him play half-back or wing with rotation to midfield and occasional forays into forward line. Could be a good tagger. Hang in there, Cory.” Michael Leung.
“Really disappointed the selection committee did not give him more of a go. Could be a very important' Michael Long-type' player for us if given a chance. Could be critical with the losses of Heffer, Blummer and Cara.” George Kotsouitis.
“Struggled to cement a place in the side this year. Cory's form dropped off badly this year compared to last. Will probably get more of an opportunity next year now that there are some vacancies in the midfield.” Geoffrey Heffernan.
THE WASH UP:
Essendon supporters were disappointed that Cory didn’t play more senior football in 2002 and said 2003 is crunch time for him. Given the club has parted company with a number of experienced players they say it is critical that McGrath makes his mark in 2003.
MARK HARVEY SAYS:
Cory would have been disappointed with the number of senior games he played, particularly after an excellent pre-season. He worked very hard pre-2002 and put himself into the top running group. Unfortunately a nagging ankle injury hampered him for much of the year. He is now a mature player and he must set an example around the place and establish himself as a regular senior player. We probably need to settle him down in one position – possibly on the half back line or the wing.
