The traditional Anzac Day clash between Essendon and Collingwood is set to take on even more significance with news the two sides will play for the Anzac Day Trophy.

The perpetual trophy has been struck and will be presented annually to the winner of the Anzac Day clash by the RSL.

The trophy will detail the names of VFL footballers known to have lost their lives during active service.

There will also be an Anzac Medal awarded to the best player on the ground for each Anzac Day clash - one who epitomises the "Anzac Spirit".

The Anzac Day Trophy adds to a number of Cups the Essendon Football Club already play for during the season.

The other cups (all of which the Bombers hold) are the Whitten Cup (Western Bulldogs), Madden Cup (Carlton) and the Sheedy Cup (Richmond).

Next Tuesday's Anzac day is shaping as a huge match for both clubs and supporters who attend the day.

Pre-match entertainment, which commences at 12.30pm, will include a fly-over of World War 2 aircraft and a performance form the RAAF band.

There will also be entertainment from Rhonda Birchmore, a motorcade featuring indigenous veterans and descendants, ex-servicemen from both clubs and an observance ceremony.
