Essendon VFL suffered its first loss in six weeks on the weekend, going down to Williamstown by 44 points.

Despite the result, a number of Bombers stood out and put their name in the ring for AFL selection.

Take a look at the leading candidates this week.

Alex Browne

After rupturing his ACL in last year’s pre-season, Browne has played every VFL match this year. The 22-year-old has been a valuable contributor using his superb ability to read the play, as well as his excellent decision making skills.  The last month has seen Browne develop some real continuity into his game, averaging 22 possessions, as well as booting two goals.

Patrick Ambrose

Ambrose was sent back to the VFL a fortnight ago and on the weekend, the youngster exemplified what makes his role at AFL level so important. The 23-year-old was ferocious with his pressure up forward, laying 11 tackles and creating several opportunities. Ambrose hit the scoreboard too, booting two goals with his 12 disposals.

Conor McKenna

McKenna’s improvement this season has been astonishing, becoming arguably the most dangerous forward in the VFL attack. The Irish-recruit has booted 12 goals this season, including eight in his last three matches, stringing together a number of consistent performances. He’s lightening quick and super skillful and could be just the injection of enthusiasm and excitement the AFL side needs to turn their season around.

Heath Hocking

Hocking has now played consecutive VFL matches since making his return from a groin injury. The hard-nosed midfielder would be a welcome inclusion should he return to the AFL side, averaging 16 disposals in his two VFL outings. Possessions aside, Hocking’s leadership would just as valuable in guiding the young Essendon side for the remainder of the season.
