Essendon has scored a memorable four-point win over Southport in trying conditions at Frankhauser Reserve.
The 13.9 (87) to 12.13 (85) victory was made even sweeter after the Dons endured a goalless first quarter, immediately setting the Bombers on the back foot.

Essendon showed incredible resolve though, eventually clawing their way back into the lead halfway through the last quarter.
Southport didn’t die wondering, making a late push in a quarter that lasted a gruelling 40 minutes.
But the Bombers held on to secure a vital win away from home.
Nick Bryan was instrumental in the ruck, producing a massive 45 hitouts accompanied by 18 disposals.
Up forward, James Stewart was dominant, hauling in 11 marks and booting four goals, the second week in a row he's kicked such a tally.
Mid-season draftees Massimo D’Ambrossio (21 disposals) and Jye Menzie (20 disposals, one goal) both put in great performances that helped shift the momentum late.
A highlight of the match was Michael Hurley in his second game back hitting the scoreboard on the end of a fantastic chain of play.
