Mason Redman’s breakout campaign has tails wagging across the competition as the seventh-year player puts together the most impressive stretch of his career.
The 75-gamer is ranked elite or above average in disposals, intercept possessions, intercept marks, metres gained and rebound 50’s.
Since round six, Redman has averaged over 109 champion data rankings points highlighted by a career best output against Gold Coast in round 18 with 154 points.
While Redman’s form has been a key driver behind the Dons’ second-half resurgence, the 24-year-old played down his own form, attributing the club’s recent winning streak to the return of influential senior players.
“We have been able to get a few cattle back on the park which is always helpful. A few more experienced bodies out there like Zach (Merrett), (Jake) Stringer, Kyle Langford and Will Snelling. These types who are very important to our team and our structure,” Redman told 1116 SEN’s Dwayne’s World.
After a 3-10 start to the season, the Dons’ three-game winning streak has drawn external criticism for being too little, too late.
While acknowledging the side was striving to achieve recent results from the start of the year, Redman said the second half season success is pivotal to launching into 2023 and beyond.
“We would be lying if we said the goal wasn’t to make finals and obviously, we have been dealt some pretty tough lessons in the first half of the year by some quality teams,” Redman said.
“We probably didn’t stand up as well as we should of and so from that point of view I understand that narrative (too little, too late) completely.”
“We were able to get games into young guys like Ben Hobbs, Sammy Durham and many other names I could include also. To get those games into those guys and to learn from those games as a team I think it will hold us in very good stead in the future (and) in the coming years.”
The 24-year-old couldn’t be more effusive of the impact senior coach Ben Rutten has had on him and the young playing group.
Redman has full confidence in Rutten’s ability to lead the future of the side.
“’Truck’ (Rutten) is sort of on the same level as us, he is learning what it is like to be a senior coach and I think that’s something we are all going through as a group together. We are all learning how to play together and learning how to really play as a team,” Redman said.
“Truck is obviously part of that with us as well as the other coaches and I think that is part of something that will make it so special when we are able to take that form and go really well. I think he is giving us our best opportunity to perform at the moment and I think in my eyes, he is the right man for the job.”
