Senior coach Ben Rutten says the inclusion of deputy vice-captain Andrew McGrath is a massive boost for his side ahead of their clash with St Kilda.

The 24-year-old was sorely missed in the Bombers' loss to Carlton after missing with an adductor strain.

Rutten said McGrath will enter Friday night's clash with the Saints fully fit after a strong week of training.

"It's great to get 'Rath' back into the team," Rutten said.

"He's one of our leaders and he's such an important player for us. We missed him by a couple of days last week (in regards to playing in round 13). He's had a full week of training and he's right to go."

Essendon fans won't have to wait long to see Massimo D'Ambrosio strut his stuff after the third pick in last month's NAB AFL Mid-season Rookie Draft was rewarded with senior selection after a standout VFL performance last week.

After collecting 33 disposals in his first game for the club at state league level, Rutten believes D'Ambrosio has what it takes to transition seamlessly into an AFL environment.

"We're all excited to be able to see what Massimo can do," he said.

"He's a really capable young man, he wants the ball in his hand, he's a nice kick and he can win his own ball.

"They're some of those strengths that we like about Massimo and to be able to have him in after only a couple of weeks of being at the club is fantastic. He'll bring some excitement and enthusiasm to our team."

Rounding out the selection for round 14 is the inclusion of utility Brayden Ham.

After losing star midfielder Darcy Parish to a badly corked calf, Rutten said Ham's versatility will be important as the Dons look to cover the loss of their star player.

"'Hammy' comes into the team to give us a bit of versatility," he said.

"We know he can play in a couple of different positions that will complement the rest of our group."
