Essendon senior coach Ben Rutten says the return of star midfielder-forward Jake Stringer is a massive boost for the confidence of his team.
The 28-year-old returns to the Dons' best 22 for the first time since round seven after battling a hamstring injury sustained at training.
Stringer's return has been accompanied by the inclusions of defender Mason Redman and Matt Guelfi, who've both drawn praise from Rutten for their outstanding form and the 'stability' they bring to Essendon's side.
"Jake, we know what he can do as a player," Rutten said.
"It gives the guys around him some confidence and belief.
"(It's great to have) 'Redders' back, who's been in career-best form this season and the same with Guelfi. Getting those guys back into the team gives us real stability and hardness."
While named for Friday's fixture, midfielder Andrew McGrath is still in some doubt to take his place in the selected side as he battles a groin complaint.
Rutten said the 24-year-old will be given every opportunity to get up for the Blues clash, with a final decision to be made tomorrow.
"We want to give him, as our deputy vice captain, every possible chance to get up for the game," Rutten said.
"He'll make a call on that tomorrow to see whether he can go or not."
Forward Devon Smith will miss this week's match as he continues to battle a knee complaint.
Rutten said Smith's knee issue had impeded his ability to prepare properly, and the 29-year-old will look to use the week off to manage the injury.
"It's been something that's been ongoing with his knee," Rutten said.
"He's been battling to get that into a position to comfortably train. Hopefully this gives him an opportunity to get on top of it."
The Bombers will face the Blues in their 150-year anniversary game on Friday night in what is set to be a huge match day. Here are all the key details.
