One of the success stories of the 2013 season at Essendon was the club’s high performance house based in Moonee Ponds.

Jake Carlisle, Jackson Merrett and Lauchlan Dalgleish moved in with Conditioning Coach Paul Turk at the start of the season with the aim for all three to play a senior game together during the season.

The trio achieved that goal with Dalgleish elevated to the senior list late in the season to play the last three rounds of the year.

In just his second season at the club Merrett proved his ability as a half forward who can run through the midfield playing 13 matches.

While Carlisle had his best season since being drafted to the club in 2009 playing 21 matches and is regarded as one of the most exciting and reliable key defenders in the league.

Carlisle said being in a high performance environment helped his football during 2013.

“It was the idea of Paul Turk as he likes to be in a professional environment,” Carlisle said.

“We set a number of guidelines and rules for each player which include things such as noise and respecting each other’s sleep patterns before a game.”

“Everyone seemed to obey the rules and it worked out really well.”

Turk said it was important to get buy in from the players before setting up the guidelines for the house.

“The really important thing about the high performance house is that it is the players that make the rules and drive the standards,” Turk said.

“We get two new players in this year to join Lachie and they will once again sit down and set the guidelines themselves to ensure they create the environment they desire.”

Entering his second season big man Sean Gregory will join Dalgleish and Turk in 2014 before they are joined by a third player to be selected at this year’s draft.

Only time will tell if the class of 2014 can reach the same lofty heights living in the high performance house.
