The Bombers are mourning the passing of life member and profound contributor Merna Slattery, who passed away on Monday night at the age of 93.

Born on the same day as the legendary John Coleman, November 23 in 1928 was the date that one of the club's greatest supporters entered the world.

With 79 consecutive years as an Essendon member, Slattery was the club's third longest-serving member.

Her contributions to the club were profound, stretching back to the 1980s and '90s when she would juggle work as a school principal in Mulgrave to regularly visit Windy Hill, cooking for the players and bringing maternal care during a period that delivered three VFL/AFL premierships under the Kevin Sheedy reign.

Slattery was also president of Essendon's ladies committee since 1998, while regularly supporting Windy Hill Venue in various ways and working tirelessly to raise funds for the club and sponsor players over many decades.

She was formally honoured as an Essendon life member in 1999, and later as a Windy Hill Venue life member in 2019.

"I consider myself so fortunate to have been involved with a club like Essendon. Throughout the many years, we've loved each other’s company, we've had a lot of fun, and I’d do it all again," Slattery said when inducted as a Windy Hill Venue life member.

The players will wear black armbands in honour of Slattery when they face Carlton in the club's 150-year anniversary game on Friday night.

Rest in peace, Merna. You'll be sadly missed.
