Essendon forward Cale Hooker will miss the side’s Elimination Final against Sydney on Saturday.
The 28 year old was a late withdrawal from the Bombers round 23 match against Fremantle with bone bruising in his leg.
Hooker didn’t train with the main group on Wednesday but will continue his rehabilitation in the hope of playing in a semi final next week.
“The key for Cale was getting him to the point where he could run pain free,” Essendon’s General Manager of Football Rob Kerr said.
“Unfortunately he didn’t quite get there and we wanted to make the call early to ensure the team and coaches can have a clear focus on the team that will take the field.
“Cale remains a strong chance to play next week should we win on Saturday.
“As was the case this week, pain will be the guide in terms of Cale's preparation from here on in.
“It’s disappointing to not have a player of his quality available but our forward line has been one of our strengths this season and we’re confident we’ve got the depth to kick a winning score."
The Bombers have won six of their last eight matches and will welcome back Michael Hurley and Orazio Fantasia for the clash with the Swans.
