Senior coach Ben Rutten says Essendon will give Zach Merrett and Jake Stringer every chance to prove their availability for Anzac Day.

The star duo were shock inclusions in Thursday's extended squad, with Merrett having undergone surgery on a syndesmosis injury less than a month ago and Stringer making a quicker-than-expected recovery from a hamstring injury.

Rutten said the pair, who joined main training on Saturday, were on track to bolster the Bombers on the biggest stage of the home and away season.

"They’re in there because we think they’re a good chance to play. We can’t bring them into the squad late, but we can take them out, so that’s part of us playing four days out and having to name the team (on Thursday)," Rutten told the media today.

"They’ve got to get through training and we’ll see how they pull up and then make a decision. They’re certainly getting really close."

Rutten admitted the club was surprised in particular with Merrett's rapid recovery.

"I think it’s been about four weeks for him. Traditionally for syndesmosis and what we’ve had in the past, it’s been about six weeks (to return to playing)," he said.

"We’ve certainly been surprised about how quickly he’s recovered. He’s looked after himself incredibly well, which we expect from a leader and professional the way he is. We’re going to give him every chance to put his hand up for selection."

Should Stringer be selected, it will mark the dynamic Don's first game since the round three loss to Melbourne.

Rutten said despite Stringer's match-winning capabilities, no risks would be taken with the 27-year-old.

"We know Jake’s a quality player. He’s really important to our team and can do things that no-one else in the team can do, and some things that no-one else in the competition can do," he said.

"Similar to the start of the year, we don’t want to take any risks with him, we want to make sure that he’s ready to go. If he puts his hand up and we select him, then he’ll be right to go. He’s progressed well and hasn’t had any hiccups with his rehabilitation."

The Bombers will name their selected 22 at 4:30pm today.
