Calf injury sidelines Laycock
Bomber Jason Laycock will miss at least half of the NAB Cup as he recovers from a calf injury
The 25-year-old sat out the Bombers' intra-club match in Shepparton on Wednesday night with a calf injury that will keep him from playing for three weeks.
The complaint presents yet another hurdle for Laycock, who is rebuilding his fitness after missing all of last season with a foot injury.
"He's quite frustrated, as is everyone on his behalf," coach Matthew Knights said.
"We'd love him out here playing but he's coming back from a calf injury and he'll up his training this week but we won't take him to Subiaco next week.
"We need this next phase of rehab to go really well because he's had a lot of interruptions and we certainly don't need another one."
Laycock's foot has repaired itself well and the calf problem is unrelated to the debilitating navicular injury that hampered him for just over a year.
"His attitude was excellent towards his rehab and he was pushing really hard, and I think that's what the trouble was," Knights said.
"He was pushing to get his fitness base up and sometimes when you push yourself hard, you run the gauntlet of injury.
"Full credit to him, he's having a real crack and we just put him in the diligent hands of our medical people to get him right."
Meanwhile, Knights said Michael Hurley (wrist) and David Myers (hamstring) would not travel to Perth next week for the Bombers' NAB Cup opener against West Coast.
Tyson Slattery (fractured fibula) is also expected to remain behind as he works through a modified program while ruckman David Hille (knee) will be kept on ice for a possible home-and-away season return.
Hille played his first match since April last year on Wednesday night and performed well in attack and the ruck.
After being impressed by new draftees Travis Coyler, Jake Melksham and Anthony Long in the intra-club match, Knights said there was a chance the recruits could feature against the Eagles.
"I've always liked to play young players and give them an opportunity, and because we play next week and then don't play again for two weeks, we'll have most players declaring themselves right to play," he said.
"Colyer showed some speed through the lines today and I thought he was quite impressive.
"Melksham carried the ball at times really well and I thought Long showed some poise across half-back at times and looked like he might be a similar type player to [Courtenay] Dempsey, who also put his best foot forward.
"Selection will be difficult."
