Born and bred Bendigo youngster Liam Byrne is set to light it up in front a massive home crowd tonight.

Formerly playing local football with South Bendigo, Byrne spent two years with the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup before signing on with Bendigo Gold last year.

Gold’s decision to fold opened the door for Byrne to join Essendon VFL for season 2015.

“Liam is a quality inside midfielder that has good vision and handballing skills,” VFL Operations Manager Matthew Little said.

“He’s a combative player that loves a contest.”

Byrne has played two games for the Bombers this season, averaging 10 disposals, five marks and two tackles.

Tonight is the perfect stage for the 20-year-old to put in a strong performance in front of the Bendigo faithful.

“I’m sure Liam will be excited to get back up there and play in front of his old home crowd,” VFL Co-Coach Mark Corrigan said.

“It will be a good experience for him and I’m sure he knows the deck well and will help the rest of the boys out.”
