Kevin Egan was hailed as a dedicated and loyal friend at Essendon’s Milestones and Hall of Fame induction.
Tim Watson reflected on Egan’s contribution to the club on the night he became a member of the Hall of Fame.
Watson said even though Egan’s playing days were long gone; he remained a willing companion on a number of end of season trips.
Egan was an outstanding rover and wingman who came from Moonee Ponds YCW to the Essendon U19s.
He won the Morrish Medal in 1962 as the competition’s best U19s player.
Although not overly tall, Egan was solidly built and made up for what he lacked in height with fierce determination.
In 1965 Egan was third in the Gardiner Medal for the best and fairest player in the VFL Reserves and was a reserve in Essendon’s 1965 premiership team.
He was later a member of the 1968 Essendon Reserves premiership side.
After leaving Essendon Egan went to Port Adelaide in 1970 and then joined Williamstown in 1971 and 1972 and Scottsdale in Tasmania in 1973.
Egan returned to Essendon as team manager in 1977 and began a long career at Essendon in a variety of roles. He was Team Manager for 15 years at a time when the club won the 1984 and 1985 premierships.
He also performed the roles of player liaison, promotions officer, and for 20 seasons was on the club’s match committee.
Egan even tried his hand at being a tribunal advocate.
His first case related to Terry Daniher striking two Collingwood players in the 1990 Grand Final.
“Terry got 12 weeks. Needless to say that was the last time I was tribunal advocate,” Egan said.
Egan was a director when the club elected to move its home games to Docklands and was also a member of the board of directors that made the decision to leave Windy Hill and develop a new training and administration base at Melbourne Airport.
