Marcus Kenny has struggled with injuries since being on the Essendon Football Club rookie list. Kenny had an injury riddled 2001 - firstly a hamstring injury saw him miss a fair chunk of pre-season training, followed by a knee injury. This is the first pre-season Kenny can remember without carrying an injury. ""Last year I was injured for throughout the pre-season - this year has been a lot better and I haven't really missed a session. I am a lot fitter than I was last year so the training has been easier in that sense. I had a hamstring injury when I first came here for about four to five weeks and that sort of kept me out for a while. I then hurt my knee at the start of the season and ended up missing about ten games due to that,"" said 19-year-old Kenny.

When Kenny returned from the knee injury last season, he played mostly at full-forward. ""I wasn't really that fit to play up the ground and mostly played at centre-half forward. I also played in the ruck a bit as well,"" said Kenny. In his junior days at the Eastern Ranges Kenny was renowned as a high marking forward with good leap and strong hands. He predominantly played at centre-half-forward, with stints in the ruck. Kenny is agile for a taller player and has impressed the Bombers coaching panel with his speed across the ground. Kenny's preferred position is up forward and in the ruck. ""I have played ruck for the past couple of weeks in the practice matches and have been enjoying that. I also enjoying playing forward as well and kicking a few goals - either would suit me fine.""

Kenny has been working hard on the training track over the summer and is aware that this season is his last opportunity on the rookie list at Essendon. He major aim this year is to secure a spot on the senior list at the end of the season. ""You only have two years on the roookie list so this is my last year - I have to perform this season. I am not really thinking about it though - I am focussing on going out there and playing footy,"" said a relaxed Kenny. Kenny is also hoping to play the full season without injury to give himself the best chance to get on the senior list. - for the last three years he has been injured at some stage through the season.

There are a number of leaders at Essendon and Kenny looks up to different players. ""I admire blokes like Peverill, Mark Bolton and Mark Johnson who work really hard and they deserve everything they get - I try and take a leaf out of their book."" Kenny also admires VFL coach Terry Daniher and has already learnt a great deal from the dual premiership player. ""Terry is really good. It is good to have someone that is easy to talk to and always comes up and encourages you. We have a bit of a laugh sometimes because he is a real larrakin so it is good fun.""

Away from football, Kenny has been busy working on a leadership program in secondary schools with teammate Mark Bolton. ""I do a program with A3 - we go around to secondary schools and talk to students about leadership. It is an initiative run by the AFL. About 70 players Australia wide participate in it and we do different activities with the students - mainly leadership and communication. It is good to have something away from football to refresh your mind a little bit.""
