Essendon isn’t certain whether midfielder Kyle Langford will return from a hamstring strain for Sunday’s elimination final against the Western Bulldogs.
The 24-year-old has missed the past three games after re-injuring his hamstring in the Dons’ loss to the Swans in round 20.
Head of high performance Sean Murphy said while Langford was progressing positively in his recovery, there was no definitive answer about his availability for Sunday.
“‘Langers’ is going along really well with (progressing from) that hamstring strain,” Murphy told Dons Digital’s Liberty Financial Performance Update.
“He’s in the rehab process at the moment, ticking all of the boxes and we’ll just continue to tick him along.”
Murphy confirmed key forward Harrison Jones had already undergone surgery to treat a foot injury which ended his season.
The surgery will ultimately give the 20-year-old the best chance to be ready for the 2022 pre-season.
“'Jonesy' had surgery early in the week to remove a little bone ossicle in his foot,” Murphy said.
“It was creating a bit of an impingement in there that was creating the bone stress.
“The decision was to remove this and get him right for the pre-season. (The decision) was conservative for the young fella to get this right going forward.”
Forward Anthony-McDonald-Tipungwuti has put his best foot forward to earn a recall for Sunday’s final after playing a full game in the Dons’ practice match against GWS.
Murphy said the 28-year-old had attacked every aspect of his program since stepping down from the senior side for personal reasons.
“'Walla’s’ been really good over the last couple of weeks,” Murphy said.
“We’ve put him into a program that the club’s put in place and he’s attacked it really well.
“On the weekend, he ended up playing a full game. We weren’t too sure with what we’d do playing a full game or limited minutes.
“He had a really impressive output and it was what we wanted to see from Walla going forward.”
Murphy also touched on Jye Caldwell’s fitness in his second practice match back from a hamstring injury, while highlighting Jake Stringer’s best high-performance effort of the season against Collingwood on Sunday.
