Forward Harrison Jones (foot) and midfielder Kyle Langford will be unavailable for Essendon’s round 23 clash with Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday.
Jones (foot) and Langford (hamstring) have missed five and two weeks respectively as they attempt a return to play.
Head of high performance Sean Murphy said Jones was giving himself every chance to make a comeback this season, re-joining main training and integrating strongly into the playing group.
“Jonesy’s progressed well,” Murphy told Dons Digital’s Liberty Financial Performance Update.
“He’s been out of the boot for a couple of weeks and he’s back running.
“(He’s been) getting load into his legs now and he’ll integrate into the group this week and look to train a little bit more next week.
“Depending on how we go over this weekend, we’re looking to push him to play in the next couple of weeks.”
Langford is in a similar spot to Jones, with the 24-year-old needing more preparation to overcome a hamstring injury.
Murphy said Langford would need at least a further week of rehabilitation to have every chance of a possible return if the Dons make the finals.
“‘Langers’ is in that hamstring rehab phase. We’re now a couple of weeks into that,” Murphy said.
“He’s getting some good sessions in, but he won’t be available this weekend.
“We’ll assess him over the next couple of weeks and it depends (if he returns) where we sit as a team.”
Murphy touched on an impressive high-performance effort from newly re-signed midfielder Matt Guelfi, while also expanding on Jye Caldwell’s and Kaine Baldwin’s game-time and fitness levels from Sunday’s scratch match against Sydney.
