Essendon ruckman, Jason Laycock, was today ruled out of the remainder of the 2009 season with an ongoing foot injury.
Football opertions manager, Paul Hamilton, said the 201cm Tasmanian will be on crutches for the next four weeks.
"We have decided to rule him out for the rest of the season following a recent surgical review," Hamilton said.
"He will be reviewed again in a month to see if a crack in this foot is healing and, if it's not getting better, it is possible there will be further surgery."
Hamilton said the club has ruled the 24-year-old out now so he can simply focus on getting his foot back to 100 percent.
"Obviously it's disapointing for Jason, and it's very disapointing for the club considering our limited ruck resources at the moment," he said.
Laycock has played 58 games since being recruited with pick No.10 in 2002.
Hamilton said that young ruckman, Tom Bellchambers, is progressing well in his recovery from a knee injury and should be available in a month.

Not the greatest news story today, but it does open the door for a rookie to be "upgraded" in coming weeks.

Very frustrating for the club and for Jason, think he has a lot to offer when he is fit and firing. Good luck to him hope he gets better soon!
this probably means he wont ever play another game for essendon... hes had his chance
Bad luck Jason - hopefully 2010 will be your season. Keep your head up & hopefully you will show us all what you are capable of next year. Best wishes
DAMN!!! That's a big blow. I've never rated Jason too highly, but we really need him out there at the moment. Oh well, no use complaining, just get yourself right for next year and prove that I'm wrong about you. I'd really like to see what the coaching staff are on about.....one day. Good luck Jason.
That is unlucky!
Ok sure he's not a great player but he is important as our ruck stocks are low! Belchambers gets 3 touches a game and Bock hasnt played a game so Ryder will be sore and sorry after this season!
That is very sad about Jason. But that is awesome news about Tom.
Play Christian Bock....would be good experience for him and will give Ryder a chance to drop back if needed
oh well mate sit out for the Rest of the Season and enjoy it its only 10 more games to go until the end
and you be back running agen for the Nab Cup
Bock is not the answer. Bring back HURLEY and Fletcher straight into the side and free up Hooker and Lucas.
Hope all goes well for you, Laycock.
He is perfect trade bait. Promote Bock and get a good draft pick for him. He is far too soft to wear the red and black.
Anyone calling for the elevation of Christian Bock from the rookie list needs to check his stats - 205cm and 83 kgs!
That's the same weight as Bachar Houli, who is 25cm shorter! Bock needs several pre-seasons before he's ready for the seniors.
lets hope sanity prevails and they bring C bock up to senior level so as paddy does not hurt himself while trying do it all.Nights is one for giving the younger ones a go
Nah leave Bock, there should be 2 changes this week. Hurley and Fletcher come back in for Hooker and Dyson. Logical...
Put him up for trade as he is still young and may attract some attention.
dont you guys read news or what?
the club has already told that bock wont b playing senior footy this year because he doesnt have enough muscle on the bones.
so looks like it'll be paddy and hooker :(
my gosh. makes the decision to re-sign him all the more dismal
Hey John from Elwood. You drop kick, if you mean John Quinn he left last year!!
Bad luck, but won't be at the club next yr.Traded or delisted.
We carnt play christian bock he is too undeveloped he is a project player and will take time its unfair to throw undeveloped players in the deep end
Not sure if Bock is upto it yet? otherwise they may have already tried him.. Rucks are a worry we really need Jason next year beacause Hille wont be able to play like he did last year coming back from the ACL plus he'll be...
I think it's time for our club doctor to move on. There seems to be way too many errors & player recoveries seem to be longer than any other club. This is the 3rd victim due to poor diagnosis this yr. 2 back operations to Winderlich nearly cost him his career; Gumbleton's back operational came after attempting a whole pre-season in pain (Wake up!); & now Laycock with recurring foot problems that will cost him another yr???? Don't they check for cracks before they play them?
With Fletch and Hurley back this week how about Fletch as backup ruckman and resting forward with Hurley relieving down back
Bad luck Jason I know that you will come back in 2010 injury free and prove your knockers how good you are
another top 10 draft pick wasted on this guy who played a mediocre 50 games.
will done essendon recruiters, you should all be sacked with recent draft choices from 2004 onward.
Lets hope Jason recovers well and the new look ruck will be Dustin resting in the fwd pocket will no doubt provide great support to Patty.
Bock needs at least 2 years of eating red meat eggs milk and gym work,he`s a bean! if Essendon were to put him in he`d be broken and gone for this season & next
don`t rush Bock give him time!
wat use on about this is gr8 news hopefully hes fit to go to the goldcoast at the end of next yr wen hes out of contract, they want a marque player laycocks there man
Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery Jason.
Not a single vote in our best and fairest last year and not one this year as well. What can we say? I don't believe he has repaid the faith put into him by the club so far and probably won't get the chance now either.
laughing all the way to the bank.it time for him to retire and find another ruckman
in the draft,be a dud for years
He's been at the club for seven years and has only played 58 games, another Henneman, make way for a rookie like Christian Bock give him a chance.
good bye jason he is a dud. ryder is the man and play bock he wll need the experience
Good luck Jason. You have been unfairly maligned by many supporters. You have a great deal of talent and I look forward to you coming back in 2010.
Do not panic and elevate Bock this year. If he stood sideways you would have to mark him absent. No disrespect either. He is work in progress. As Bendigo do not play again until 28th June will Hurley play this week in seniors. Pity Jason just cannot get on the paddock. Good luck Jason with your future whatever it holds.
walrock10 lee, I've said it before our recruiting manager is Adrian DUDoro (Dodoro)who like Knights has no idea and should be sacked. You can't blame Sheeds for the past poor recruiting of the hacks we have drafted. Bradley, Johns, Laycock, Dyson, Stanton etc etc. Regards Ivar.
Elevate Bock & risk permanent injuries for short term gain, remember our whole team is young, we are looking at being the fastest, most daring & awsome team the AFL has seen in '10, don't risk burning any of the young guns out, & also Fletch is returning from a fractured Fibula so rucking might be a bit much for the first few weeks back,& WHY drop Dyson, he has been in best 5-6 for most games...tbc
Cont... Remember Jason or no player tries to get injured, the medical staff may have erred early in his career x not resting him for long enough as we did not have many ruckmen & he was brought on to soon, same might happen to Bock, also, do we bag/delist or trade Gumby, 5 games in 3years,I don't think so, Both have enormous talent worth perservering with, big guys take longer to develope, good luck 2 both next year
To kick Jason when he's down is a pretty low act wether he's in the AFL system next year is yet to be seen he may play VFL or go home to Tassie best of luck Jason with your future whatever it holds. anyone who thinks there is a single club that has'nt made mistakes at the draft or trade period is joking themselves NEWSFLASH Iver Biggen is our new recruitment manager
It bad news bad for Laycock. Bock is not the answer either. He is 205cm and weighs only 83kg. Simlar weight to Houli, Stanton, McVeigh, Prismall etc... he would really struggle against most big ruckman in the comp.
So Ivar Smallbrain, you say Sheedy can't be blamed for the hacks we drafted in his later years. Well, fool, the senior coach has final say on who is drafted and bears ultimate responsibility.
Laycock has another year to run on his contract so he may be at Essendon in 2010. But with Hille, Ryder and Bellchambers ahead of him it is hard to imagine him getting a senior game. Better to cut our losses on Laycock and delist or trade.
The AFL is a business. If people aren't performing due to various reason, drop em. If you're body can't keep up then bad luck! It's nothing personal. But there's another kid with an awesome physical body and massive potential just waiting to take your place!
This may be the last we see of Laycock even with another year to run on his contract. He has had his chances and has not delivered, apart from one or two games. Never looks interested while he is out there.... A real shame he hasnt delivered on his potential. A good opportunity to elevate Christian Bock I say even if he only plays a hand full of game while Bellchambers is recovering it will be beneficial for his development...GO BOMBERS
As for elevating Christian Bock it would be great if he was ready but he's not I watched him at windy hill and can see he has a lot of potential the match commitee will work out the best line up maybe in our favour is Melbourne's inexperienced ruckmen so Hooker and Lucas may be back up for Paddy I people should stop kicking Laycock yes he's contracted for next year but none of us know what sort of performance clauses are in it such as play 'x' games in of 09 for 2010 to be honoured .....GO BOMBERS
Great to "hear" Ivar Littlun back on air talking more drivel - I needed a laugh & thanks to Ivar I got it! More seriously, leave Bock where he is & give him time, leave Laycock alone & get him fit (he's only 24), don't risk Fletch in the ruck & most of all, be patient & take heart from the positives. Oh
The big fella will get his body right and show a few people how wrong they can be? I seem to recall some of the above "experts" bagging Scotty Lucas a few years back!
A much maligned player. When fit and lean looking he impresses me for the most part, seems to have a good football brain. I bet you this though, if he is delisted, he will be picked by another club and will succeed wherever he goes.
i cant believe the amount of horrid things some people have to say...jason hasnt taken his chances as much as people wouldve liked...but yeh hes only 24...its taken hille a fair while to really step up & that was with perseverance...let him get his body right
Congrats to a great team, although we only beat Judds Jokers. Our ruks did the job asked of them last night.
Best sellers in the Bomber Shop this week...

Jason Laycock will miss the rest of the 2009 season.
