McVeigh in contention for Kangaroos clash

Essendon barometer Mark McVeigh is a near certainty to pull on the Bombers guernsey this weekend against North Melbourne after overcoming an ankle injury sustained in the pre-season.

Speaking to the media today, Matthew Knights revealed that McVeigh will definitely come into the equation when the selection committee meets on Thursday.

“McVeigh is very keen to get back out there. He has definitely put his hand up to play,” Knights said.

“We rate him pretty highly from a leadership perspective and also in the way he goes about his football. He is pretty inspirational for us.

“I’m going to look pretty strongly at him this week at training but would like to see him out there on Sunday.”

Promising young midfielder Sam Lonergan is another player who has been declared fit and will generate plenty of discussion at the selection meeting.

The 21-year-old, has missed Essendon’s last two games after sustaining a minor fracture to his hand at training.

“Sam Lonergan is physically right to play,” Knights said.

“Sam has trained fully this week and has completed all sessions. He trained last week but had a little bit of soreness left in his hand.

“We still have a main session to go but I think he is a good chance to be physically right to go but we will need to sit down at match committee and go through last week’s team before making a decision.”

In other injury news, Kyle Reimers is progressing well from quad tendonitis and Knights said the livewire is eagerly pushing for a senior berth.

“Kyle came into my office, probably twice this week declaring himself fit,” Knights said.

“He is still a couple of weeks away but he is very spirited. He loves a contest and loves playing football but it’s a conditioning element now.

“His injury is healing quite well and now he has to get some conditioning through his running, and kicking so hopefully in two or three weeks he’ll be available for selection.

“It’s Kyle’s career on the line here so we need to be patient with his injury because we really rate him as a player.”

I love the idea of The Reimenator knocking on Knighter's door every couple of days asking to be played - that sums the kid up perfectly. Can't wait to see him back in the 1's.

Great to see the mighty Bombers getting some respect! Lets not wait for another 5 years for our best win!!! McVeigh and Lonergan IN Dyson and Jetta OUT.

Mcveigh and Mcphee have to play but who gets left out? Zarahariks was quiet against Carlton but awesome against Fremantle. Will Quinn come back in? winning games without Mcveigh, welsh,Longergan, reimers,Mcphee and laycock will be a big bonus for latter in the year.

- Garry Holmes (posted 15/04/2009 2:49:05 PM)
lol mate sam lonergan is a mile ahead of ricky dyson. with mcphee, mcveigh and spike all back in its going to be a hard call for selectors but id say jetta, dyson and probally nash or pears for the above 3 would be on the cards
- Brad Clark (posted 15/04/2009 3:03:42 PM)

I hope Mark McVeigh can come back into the side this week. As for the Jetta knockers, GET OFF HIS BACK!!
- Sue ONeill (posted 15/04/2009 6:20:08 PM)
I would love to see McVeigh and Lonergan out there and i'd say Houli is a strong chance Reimers bashing on the Nighter's door is great his hardness and flair would be great although i trust the medical/fitness staff on that one and Jezza i think he's got green boots this year whatever colour wont matter to see him take on the pies would be great
- Simon Mayo (posted 15/04/2009 8:23:25 PM)
Bombers to finish 5th then surprise everyone and do a 93 and win the flag. GO BOMBERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Matthew Holloway (posted 15/04/2009 9:25:22 PM)
in Mcphee Mcveigh out Jetta Nash Dyson is a key player. He has good pace and a long pentrating kick. Deserves another gain. Longergan will have to wait!
- LUCAS GREEN (posted 15/04/2009 9:48:44 PM)
Would think that the team that beat Carlton should be retained for this week and save the likes of McVeigh for the Collingwood encounter on Anzac Day.
- Noel Paech (posted 15/04/2009 10:22:07 PM)
mcveigh/mcphee/lonergan 4 dyson/pears/jetta! then slowly work houli and reimers in to the mix... GO BOMBERS
- john de vera (posted 15/04/2009 11:54:32 PM)
I think Jetta needs a spell out as he needs to go back and learn how to read the play better to be able to get to where the ball is. His usual low possession count indicates this shortfall. Ricky Dyson also needs to go back, still too much of an outside player that needs to improve his attack on the ball. Hocking must stay in, he's doing some good "inside" work that doesn't always equate to possessions.
