Confidence boosting win against arch rival

Essendon assistant coach, Scott Camporeale, has described today’s 48 point win against arch rival Collingwood at the MCG as confidence boosting.

“It was very nice, especially since the ANZAC Day game wasn’t great so I guess we were looking for a little redemption and to win by that much is a credit,” he said.

“It’s hard to single a player out in a win like that, I thought Jobe obviously had a fair bit of ball and was terrific, Welshy again, Hille again, I think Monfries’ job on Heath Shaw was fantastic, Fletcher down back .. they all put in which was really important.”

Camporeale said the team showed real character to respond when Collingwood fought back and reduced the lead.

“It’s good for the players that they have the self belief to get into those situations and then get out of it,” he said.

“Obviously we don’t want to get into those situations too much but it was full credit to them.

“It doesn’t matter how many players you have out in the stands you can only play with what’s on the ground but I think it’s important for this group to know we can do it – obviously we have players to come back but it’s great confidence building for the group to know we can beat a top eight side.”

The game started with Monfries attacking the ball and handballing to Lloyd who was streaming towards goal for the first major of the day.

An increasing dangerous Jetta found the ball and handballed to Welsh who curved his kick around from 35m out for the second goal of the game.

With Slattery, Fletcher and Ryder standing strong down back and Hille dominating around the ground the Bombers were in control and Welsh marked a goaled from 50m the Bombers went up 20 points to nil.

A free kick and 50m to Welsh in the centre two minutes later saw him kick his third for the quarter.

When Fletcher hit the ball through at 13 minutes into the game the Magpies had their first score – 27 points to 1 point.

The Bombers replied quickly with Lloyd passing to Monfries who goaled from 45m out.

Cloke marked and goaled just before the 21 minute mark for Magpies first major.

Monfries was unstoppable across half-forward but the Bombers didn’t’ capitalise on their chances and kicked point after point and took a 28-point lead into the break.

Welsh and Dyson the major ball winners for the quarter.

The second quarter started with Hille missing an easy opportunity running into goal.

The Magpies rebounded quickly with a hand pass from Cloke to Didak who kicked his first and his team’s second major of the day.

You could feel the momentum shift the Magpies way but they weren’t able to convert.

Essendon had their chances too but it took a great pass from Medhurst to Anthony at the 13th minute mark for the Magpies to get their next goal.

A poor kick-in by the Bombers’ led to Cloke’s second goal of the day

Collingwood were winning the ball with ease and got their next goal through a passage of five handballs in the forward fifty, the final one ending in the hands of Leon Davis.

Just when Essendon need it most, Lloyd took a great mark under pressure and managed to convert to stop the Collingwood flow.

A great Dyson kick to Stanton 30 seconds later was a confidence lifter and the Bombers could have extended their lead further but Monfries sprayed a shot from 40 meters out.

Cloke was given a free kick only minutes later due to Ryder holding his arm and goaled for his third major of the day.

Lloyd missed an easy chance and Davis failed to convert after the siren – the Bombers up by nine points at half-time.

The third quarter started badly with Didak slotting one through from 50m in the opening 20 seconds.

When things looked down, Monfries went up taking a big mark over Wood 20m out and kicking his second goal.

A free kick to Lloyd moments later saw the captain kick his third to take the margin back to 14 points.

Another free, this time to Jetta, resulted in the Bombers’ third a row.

A hard working Lonergan took the ball out the middle, it ended with Lovett-Murray who kicked a great running goal from 50m to take the margin out to 26 points.

Another good Dyson run through the middle and pass hit Reimers who kicked his first. Bomber up by 32 points.

Two strong marks and goals to Collingwood players, first Anthony then Davis, brought the margin back to 21 points.

The Bombers had let offs when Cloke missed from 30m out and straight in front and again when Swan missed too.

Essendon finished the quarter up 19 points, Watson Essendon’s most damaging player.

Essendon squandered early chances to start the final quarter and the Magpies hit back with a big Medhurst goal from 55m out.

Lovett-Murray responded by finding Reimers who just scraped his kick in for a goal. The margin still 19 points.

Another Hille moment of excellent saw him knock his opponent out the way and hand ball to Reimers who ran into goal for his third.

When McPhee was shepherded out of a marking contest, and Collingwood gave away 50m, he had the chance to make the margin 31 points. McPhee kicked truly from 50m and the game looked to be Essendon’s for the taking.

Cloke missed an easy one and Welsh kicked an impossible one - after the ball took a lucky bounce and went through - and the celebrations started. Essendon up 37 points.

The lead only extended when Reimers got himself another goal and Hille took a great mark and goal to finish a great game.

Oh Bliss ! The natural order is restored. A really good effort in the midfield with important players missing. Question: How many Coll'wood supporters do we think there would be if there parents (who live of past glory) had not brainwashed them? Not too many I suspect. Just love watching them leave before the game ends, lighting their smokes and moaning about how they were crucified by the umpires.

This was a GREAT win, and everybody contributed to it. I thought Scotty got a raw deal from the umpires - pulled and jostled all day, but no frees All the youngsters were good, in particular Monfries, and Jetta for his tackling. Watson, Stanton, Hill terrific. Watson and Stanton good as usual. I think Peverill and Michael should have a contract extension. They, together with Rama, cool things down. Fletcher, of course, is the master. McPhee was better down back. Hope Paddy is okay. GO, BOMBERS!

CAAAARLTON and now COLLINGWON'T! This season just keeps getting better & better. After the 8 straight losses I was just waiting for the season to end & dare I say it... looking at what games we may accidentally win to jepordise our shot at the no. 1 draft pick. But hang on... the boys are starting to gel & the future is as bright as Kyle's boots. Can't wait for next season with a full list but great stuff by the guys on the park at the minute. Gotta love the ticker of this current crop.

Tough win for the whole club! Great start which is vital and puts opposition under pressure. Collingwood play boring footy while Dons are exciting. Can't believe Lucas was reported-very soft call. GO DONS!!

Great game boys! Revenge is sweet. Best game I've been to all year.
- Leanne Butterworth (posted 26/07/2008 9:04:41 PM)
the most impressive part of this win is our key players who will come back next year! between McVeigh, Houli, Gumbles, Neagle, Davey, Lovett, Dempsey etc. etc their is a great list & next year we could be deeply intrenched in the finals at 4 or 5 (injuries & form permitting) & an extra 1 or 2 years we could be challenging our next flag. another ruckman & defender from next years draft & we are about set for a thrilling few years! Knights will be licking his lips with what sheeds has left him with!!!

well done Bombers , great win.. well done to every player today all of them can hold their head up high.. well done pev, since you got back to the seniors you've done what you do best 'go in and get that hard ball, essendon f.c. would be very foolish to get rid of you at the end of the year ' let's hope you can stay for a few more years . keep up the great work boys..

We've had false dawns with guys like Bradley, Laycock, Dyson etc who showed flashes of talent but disappear for weeks after that. Now, Monfries, Reimers, Jetta, Davey (when he's in one piece), Slattery, Houli, Ryder, Nash and co are performing week in week out. Add to that the step up the medium_experience players like McVeigh, Welsh, Hille, Stanton, Watson, Winderlich etc have made to the top level, that complements our champions like Fletcher, Lloyd and Lucas (when he gets fit again) beautifully. The near future is very bright for the mighty Red-and-Black.

Whoever was bagging knighter at the start of the season, including those essendon supporters out there, I hope you realise how wrong you are and eating your words! As Sheeds says ""Our boys have been knighted!""
- Adrian Reynolds (posted 27/07/2008 9:24:11 AM)
Fantastic win, I'm starting to get really excited about this list. Reimers,Lonergan and Jetta are coming along nicely, Welsh has reinvented himself in his new role and has a new lease of life. David Hille now must be considered one of the premier big men in the league and his progress this year has been outstanding. And Jobe Watson - wow, to be honest I always thought he would be a hardworking honest midfielder but he has stepped his game up another level and is growing into a player of the Sam Mitchell mould. Given we have so many quality players out, and we still have an ace up our sleeve - Scott Gumbleton, who knows where this list can take us. Bombers Forever.
- Aaron Curwen-Walker (posted 27/07/2008 9:48:55 AM)
go bombers cant wait for another collingwood thrashing on anzac day in ""o9"" keep up the fantastic effort boys.!!
- ryan peters (posted 27/07/2008 10:50:31 AM)
Great all round team effort bombers. Pev has shown he's not finished yet. Great to see Mal back & playing solid. Monfries is starting to grow in stature. When we have a full list (and a support ruckman for Hille who is in All-Australian form) we'll be a genuine contender again!
- Gary Nunn (posted 27/07/2008 11:08:36 AM)
excellent work essendon its great to see that we are improving hopefully we will make the top 10 this year then next year top 8 then the year after top 4 then hopefully we will play like geelon GO THA BOMBERZZ

Go BOMBERS gO!!!!! fantastic effort boys. my family is barracking for the dons. although we have different opinions about the players, the coach and their game style, especially during their tough times. but i always believe they have the right coach and the game plan and the players, it's just a matter of time, and the time as arrived. hille, watson, stanton, welsh were good as usual.the young players lonergan, reimers and jetta are the future stars.pev deserves a contract extension and so as michael.premiership is not far away, and to all those unloyal bomers supporters, shame on you!!!
- mark manginsay (posted 27/07/2008 12:21:35 PM)
The New exciting Game plan says it all --run, run, take on what's coming and execute your skills with flair, oh, and did I mention run..so exhilarating and pretty to watch. I've got two young kids just wantungto be llike Gus, Jetts and Reimers..it might cost me more for those Orange boots. Opposition teams are once again scared of the mighty red and black, our self belief and team unity. Bring it on!!
- Darren Adey (posted 27/07/2008 10:01:30 PM)
I've been a one-eyed Bomber fanatic for nearly 50 years and I've seen our battles with rivals like Carlton Hawthorn and Brisbane. But the funny thing is that after all the years, a win over Collingwood always tastes the best!!!
- Elbows Bull (posted 27/07/2008 10:29:38 PM)
Well done Bombers, keep up the good work, lets finish the year well, so we can look forward to 2009. Let's not overlook the effort by our coach and coaching staff in how we are performing.
- Vince Musolino (posted 28/07/2008 12:24:41 AM)
Knights, you are a legend. Well deserved win, our boys are playing champagne football. As our theme songs says ""The other teams they don't fear!"" - you showed no fear on Saturday, only guts, determination to win and a drive that should have even Geelong shaking in their boots.
- Daniel Grbac (posted 28/07/2008 10:15:44 AM)
Terrific win. We are playing a very honest, hard and exciting brand of footy. Great to see players really getting the most from themselves giving %100. Future looks great and this season is long from over. Lets not undervalue guys like Pev and Michael, great contribution from both . Very pleased with developing players getting better each week and experienced players reinventing themselves. Well coached. Well played. Go Dons.
- Greg Sloan (posted 28/07/2008 11:22:14 AM)
I'm a bit surprised at the fact that i can't see a clear mention of Dyson's game on saturday. he worked hard in the first and last quarters, racked up 26 touches, and showed signs that we have all been waiting for. was really pleased with Reimers, Lonergan and atkinson as well! lonergan for rising star this week, and Hille for all-australian
- Rowan Lace (posted 28/07/2008 11:49:51 AM)
Agreed Dyson was good, like Stanton he seems to have improved his hardness at the contest recently and deserves to keep a spot. Agree also on keeping Michael and Peverill for another year - pace is important but not everything, these two bring other important characteristics to the table.
- Francis Connolly (posted 28/07/2008 1:30:25 PM)
Great win by the Bombers, just fantastic especially since the boss is Collingwood. Hasn't he been whinging this morning!! Would hate to be the ones choosing who to delist at the end of the year. With this being the last decent draft (GC concessions) we will probably look at moving at least 6 on. Goodluck!
