The Essendon Women's Network is proud to announce that nominations for the 2018 Football Woman of the Year Awards are now open.
The Awards recognise the amazing skill, dedication and effort of women in football. This is the 20th year of the awards, and the Essendon Football Club and the AFL are very proud supporters of the Awards.
We are very pleased to announce the following categories for 2018:
- Emerging Leader Award – for women aged 30 or younger who are inspiring other women in football and who are showing strong leadership capabilities.
- Community Award – to celebrate our unsung heroes who work on a volunteer basis whether at
- Fujitsu General Football Woman of the Year Award – to celebrate and honour the achievements of women who have made an exceptional contribution within the Australian Rules football industry.
Nominees can be self-nominated or a nomination can be put forward on behalf of a woman, with her consent.

Previous winners include Bec Goddard, Daisy Pearce, Jan Cooper, Peta Searle, Debbie Lee and Susan Alberti, and Lee praised the Essendon Women’s Network for their unmatched support of women in the industry.
“It’s really good that the Essendon Women’s Network actually have the foresight to acknowledge women in the sport,” Lee said.
“Because they developed the concept at a time when I don’t think there was any acknowledgement around women’s football and women working in football, so it’s a really great testament to them.”

The Comedy Debate is a
Hosted by Tiffany Cherry, be there as we celebrate the incredible contribution of women in football and have a laugh with Australia’s most renowned comedians. The Comedy Debate, moderated by Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann, will argue the topic ‘AFL players can, and should, self-umpire their games’.
All guests will also be treated to a two-course lunch accompanied by Wolf Blass wines, Colonial Brewing Co. beers and soft drinks, special live entertainment, an exclusively designed Antler bag filled with gifts and the official after party.
There will also be an outstanding silent and live auction raising important funds for the Essendon Football Club and the Event Charity Partner, Breast Cancer Network Australia.
