Essendon champion Scott Lucas says the Bombers could look to include David Myers in the team for this weekend’s clash against Fremantle.
Myers has spent the last two weeks in the VFL and after collecting 35 disposals on his return last week; he picked up 27 possessions and laid nine tackles against Werribee on Saturday.
Lucas said Myers’ extra strength around ball could be important against key Fremantle onballers Nat Fyfe and David Mundy - who were both kept to less than 20 possessions against West Coast on Saturday.
“You look at [David] Mundy and [Nat] Fyfe … they were really well shut down by the Eagles midfield … look to see perhaps David Myers who has been in good form in the VFL, a big bodied midfielder, he might come in to add some midfield depth there,” Lucas said.
The Bombers could welcome back several players for the trip west with Matthew Leuenberger, James Kelly and Aaron Francis all rested on the weekend.
Brent Stanton is also available while Craig Bird (28 possessions, 11 tackles) and Kyle Langford (20 possessions, 14 tackles) were busy in the VFL.
The side will be looking to rebound after a 38-point loss to Melbourne.
Lucas said the Demons ability to nullify the Bombers ability to attack through the middle of the ground, coupled with the Dons poor kicking efficiency were key factors in the final result.
“The field kicking was poor for pretty much all of the day,” Lucas said.
“Joey [Daniher] had a bad day, as you do now and again, so its back to the drawing board there, a lot of hard work this week for all of the boys.
“I also thought Melbourne really understood what Essendon wanted to do and guarded the corridor really well.
“Every time Essendon brought the footy back inside the corridor, Melbourne had their numbers there and with our kicking 'off', they were able to turn the ball over and score against us."
Michael Hurley was among the Bombers best players as he gathered 23 disposals, pulled down 13 marks and recorded a game-high seven rebounds from the defensive 50.
“I think early on in the year 'Hurls' was just getting back in the groove, it just took him that little longer having been out of the game for a while,” Lucas said.
“He’s been back in really good form over the last two weeks, he controlled the backline, his intercept marking and his long kicking has been a feature of those games.”
