Zach Merrett says the experience he gained leading the side last year has helped prepare him for the Vice-Captain duties he will take on this season.

The reigning Crichton Medal winner captained the side in Brendon Goddard’s absence late last season, including when the Dons beat Gold Coast, a game in which Merrett amassed 38 possessions.

Merrett said the added responsibility had broadened his outlook.

“It was a great experience to Captain for those two games,” he said.

“It really changes your perspective on what’s important.

“Winning is always important but you certainly look out for guys a lot more when you are the Captain, or in a bit more of a leadership role, and just making sure everyone is doing the right thing.”

Merrett is the youngest member of the seven-man leadership group and was named Vice-Captain alongside Cale Hooker.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet to be honest,” Merrett said.

“To share it with ‘Hooksy’ is a pretty high honour, a privilege and a very humbling experience for myself.

“I think its fantastic Dyson has been named Captain and he can take this Club forward.”

Merrett won plenty of possessions in the Bombers final intra-club hit out before the start of the pre-season series next week.

“I’m looking forward to getting into the JLT Community Series,” Merrett said.

“Pre-season has been solid… everyone is fit and healthy at this time of year.

“We’re no different and I’m looking forward to getting into some games.”

The Dons take on Collingwood at Etihad Stadium on Thursday.
