Essendon hopes a new look forward mix will help improve the side’s scoring ability in 2017.

The Bombers were the only side to average less than ten goals a game last season, but along the way unearthed some fresh talent.

Orazio Fantasia booted 29 goals, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti kicked four goals in the win over Carlton and Joe Daniher continued his upward curve taking out his third straight leading goal kicker award.

Travis Colyer, Cale Hooker, Josh Green and James Stewart have also been added to the mix this season.

“We’re certainly aiming at improving our scoring ability and we’ve got a key forward (Joe Daniher) that has been in his developing years in the last three or four years and he’s really coming along well so we expect to see that Joe continues that improvement and is becoming a more mature key forward for us,” Worsfold told SEN.

“We’re adding some mature bodies around him but we’ve (also) added some speed in that forward line.

“Fantasia made his debut in the forward line last year and really showed what he can do. Travis Colyer is back with a lot of leg speed and ball winning ability, Josh Green with some really good leg sped, crumbing, clean hands and McDonald-Tipungwuti can also play forward.

“We now have depth and options to look at in terms of that real speed up forward and all those guys I believe can kick goals.”

Daniher booted 43 goals last season in the best return of his career.

Worsfold said the 22 year old had been working alongside Hooker throughout the pre-season, while Stewart provides another key forward option.

Mitch Brown, who featured in attack at times in 2016, has been training with the defensive group.

“We believe that for every extra goal we can score, that takes away an opportunity for the opposition to get down the other end,” Worsfold said.

“We want to be better defensively, we want to be a very attacking and exciting team and we want to be a very strong and competitive team around stoppages as well.

“That’s the aim – to improve in all of those areas.”
