Essendon Chief Executive Xavier Campbell says he never had to issue a sales pitch to secure Jobe Watson’s commitment for next season.
Watson announced this morning that he would return to the Bombers for the 2017 season.
The Bombers have taken a patient approach to securing commitments from their missing stars.
Heath Hocking was the first to confirm his commitment for next season on the eve of round two.
Another ten teammates (including Michael Hibberd and Tayte Pears) declared their hand with eight wanting to return.
Watson was the last piece of the puzzle, but the speculation ended on Friday morning.
“It’s obviously really important for us as a football club – Jobe is a fantastic person,” Campbell said.
“He was critically important but what’s most important is that he’s very happy.
“He’s got great ambition, great drive and great passion and to have him come back to the football club knowing the value he adds both on the field and off the field is really important for us.
“It wasn’t something we were selling to him and it wasn’t something we were selling to other players.
“It took the time it needed to take for them to be comfortable in their decision.
“Obviously for each of them it has taken different amounts of time and we have to respect that and we’re really happy with the outcome today.”
Despite the challenges presented during the season, Campbell said the Club had taken steps forward but was aware challenges remain.
“There is a lot of hard work in front of us but we’re certainly moving in the right direction,” Campbell said.
“This year there were some challenges … but I think generally speaking the group, under John’s leadership, made some good progress.
“Every club has an ambition to play finals football. For us our focus is the hard work needed to be competitive on the field.”
