Essendon VFL Coach Matthew Egan will finalise his playing list in the next few weeks.

Egan and his coaching team will use the weekend’s win over the Cats, as well as pre-season form, to gauge who will make the final cut.

The coaches would have found plenty to talk about from the Saturday’s win, with several players showing promising signs.

After a slow start, the team was able to finish strongly to defeat the Cats 17-points.

“The first half was a real scrappy kind of game with a lot of stoppages,” Egan said following the win.

“It was a fairly young VFL list. I think the more experienced guys seemed to stand out.”

Aaron Heppell was one of the more experienced VFL listed players to standout collecting 15 disposals, laying three tackles and moving forward to kick a goal.

The younger brother of Dyson, Aaron looks to have improved his running and disposal efficiency during the off-season.

Egan would have also been pleased with the performances of Daniel Thompson and Ben McNiece, who both proved to be handy across the half-back line.

It will be a tough selection process as the coaches look to emulate and improve on the 2015 season.

“We have to go back now and have a look at our list and get it finalised over the next couple of weeks,” Egan said.

“That’ll be an important step for us, as we will then be able to move forward and really work on our gameplan.”

Essendon VFL has so far made 19 signings, with a mix of familiar and fresh faces set to take to the field for the 2016 season.
