John Worsfold says he will try to help the Essendon players enjoy the game again when they return to the Club to commence the pre-season.
The man who has been a central figure in each of the West Coast Eagles three premierships was announced as the Bombers Coach today.
He takes charge of a list seeking to rebound after a season of off-field attention and on-field defeats.
“There is some challenges from where we’re starting at … we’ll be aiming to improve year on year,” Worsfold said.
“I’m pretty intense in terms of trying to do the best possible job we can do, but the game is supposed to be fun for us all.
“I’ve felt for the Essendon players that they probably haven’t had that love of the game as much as what they should have.
“That’s certainly an aim to make sure that they love turning up to training, they love playing the game and they love representing the Essendon Football Club.
“It’s a wonderful game, a great environment to work in, but we are at the elite level so there is no short cuts involved."
Despite the advent of modern tactics, Worsfold says the keys to success remain simple and he will try to ensure the communication with players is clear.
“Kick goals and stop goals, it always comes back to that,” he said.
“We need to be able to score but we need to have very good defensive processes as well.
“A lot of the stuff I like to Coach is about being absolutely clear – what is it going to take for Essendon to be back up playing finals and winning premierships and how we’re all going to be accountable to that together.”
