Mark Bolton, 28, last night became the fourth Bomber to announce his retirement, joining James Hird, Chris Heffernan and Scott Camporeale.
An emotional Bolton made his announcement at the Crichton Medal last night where he thanked his family, friends, team-mates and the Club.
Bolton is recognised as one of Essendon’s most popular players and hardest workers.
He made his debut for Essendon in 1998 after being selected with pick 4 in the 1997 draft and played 124 games and kicked 50 goals.
He made his decision after meeting with coach Matthew Knights on the weekend.
""I have a heavy heart but no regrets, it has been a rollercoaster,"" Bolton said.
""Just the emotions you feel from one day to the next. That's what makes it the hardest but most rewarding thing and I want to say a special thanks to the supporters.""
Knights said Mark had an amazing work ethic and would feel comfortable that he got everything he could out of his body.
""He played important roles on champion players in the last two to three years and was able to curb their influence,"" Knights said.
""I coached him for the majority of the year with the Bendigo Bombers and he embraced an important a mentoring role.
""I used him as a resource to help the young players because I respect and value his knowledge.""
